Traffic congestion falls as recession bites

By Paul Robins

Congestion on the M4 has fallen by 21 per cent in the past year due to the recession, new research has revealed.

A study by the AA claims traffic levels have dropped by nearly a third across the UK since the economic crisis took hold.

The study pinpoints six reasons why congestion has fallen:

- There has been a fall in the overall number of vehicles on the road.

- There has been a completion of major roadwork projects.

- Drivers are actively avoiding the rush hour periods.

- More people are working from home.

- More people are seeking alternative means of transport.

- There has been a fall in the number of commuters at peak times because of the recesssion.

Just to point out that the article does mention this: '- More people are seeking alternative means of transport.'

Plus people are driving less because of the increase in petrol prices.

The only difference with traffic this year has been the usual school holiday reprieve On my daily commute S-N through Sonning over the last few weeks there has been little to no traffic going through the village, now its back to queuing through to the bridge and the queues on the north side go back to the main Henley rd!!
