Swedish store may take over Woolworths site

August 06, 2009

A Swedish retail giant may take over the former Woolworths shop in Reading town centre.

Clas Ohlson, which sells everything from household goods to office supplies, has submitted a planning application for new signage and sliding doors for the vacant premises.

The company said it hoped to sign a lease within the next few weeks but would not confirm when the new branch in Broad Street might open.

Launched in 1918, Clas Ohlson now operates more than 100 stores across Scandinavia and opened its first UK outlet in Croydon last year.

Another opened in Manchester in April and a deal has just been agreed for a third shop in King-ston.

Spokeswoman Rise Lewis said: “The strategy is to look at a number of sites in the north west and the south east, the big shopping towns.

“Reading is a top shopping destination and can attract people from a great catchment area.”
