University students sow SEEDs of future

Businesses and students are being encouraged to try The University of Reading’s work placement programme.

The Summer Enterprise Experience and Discovery Scheme (SEED), run by the Careers Advisory Service, offers paid summer work experience for students as well as providing local companies and organisations with additional resources.

Beginning in June, the placements last eight weeks. Projects have included website design, environmental audits, setting up IT systems and scientific research in commercial fields.

Last year’s top performer Jack Hollingworth, a computer science student, helped IT firm Assuria develop software for its new remote scanning tool.

All SEED students will spend a day with a trainer before starting the internship and will showcase their projects in a finale.

Students will receive a basic weekly training allowance of £225 per week. For smaller companies the total cost per student is £2,350 and for larger firms it is £2,700.
