Crime-busting firms win their just reward

November 17, 2005

BUSINESSES and retailers across Reading and Wokingham celebrated after scooping an award for their fight against crime.

The Reading with Wokingham Business Security Agreement won the Safer Business Award for meeting the national standard for tackling business crime.

Under the new scheme, business people, retailers and licensees share information with the police and councils to combat crime.

As part of the partnership, which so far includes more than 200 companies from Reading and Wokingham, members can exchange information on the whereabouts of repeat criminals.

Members also report incidents to one central system and get reports on offenders, the methods they use, and the patterns of crime in the area.

Councillor Tony Page, head of community action, said: “The Business Security Agreement is a key part of Reading’s community safety strategy and we are delighted that the scheme has received the award.”
