Save our shops

Paul Robins

A rallying call to save Reading’s small independent shops has been sent out to the community.

Several small traders in the town have been forced to close due to mounting financial pressures in recent years, and now the Evening Post is backing a new initiative to breath life back into local retail.

The point of the campaign is for local businesses to compete on level playing field. Local and national government can help in many ways. Ensuring that parking near local shops is kept free or at low rates is essential, when competing with supermarkets who in the main offer free parking. Effective local policing to ensure that consumers feel safe when they go to local shops. This list is not exhaustive but one final point is where supermarkets sell items temporarily at a loss, which in many other European countries would be illegal, this can easily put local businesses out of business as they can't compete at a loss. However, once the local businesses are put out of business the supermarkets can raise the prices.

This is a very commendable petition and sentiment. However, market forces dictate that people will buy for price and convenience almost exclusively so a real change in mindset needs to take place.

Furthermore, the chose of 'independent retailer' outlets needs to be more diverse. Row upon row of little over-priced supermarkets selling the same not very high quality products on the Oxford Road for example does little to encourage a diverse customer base.
