Bees Blog: Improvements must lead to a winBy Katie Eleftheriou
December 01, 2010
Katie Eleftheriou, fan turned boss of the Bracknell Bees, gives an insight into running a top ice hockey team.
Winning or losing revolves around the small points in a match. It's those tiny seconds that feel like hours when they actually happen.
Such fine margins are great when they go your way but when they don't, it feels like the earth could open up and swallow you whole.
Well what a weekend that was.
We had all demanded a better performance with more passion to be shown on the ice.
The guys have been working doubly hard in training, correcting all the small errors that add up, working on the tactics and concentrating on defence making sure that any team that comes to The Hive or plays Bracknell knows they have been in the game and have to work hard for their beers.
Those that traveled to Milton Keynes on Saturday saw the team do just those things against a well oiled lightning machine that are well used to dominating games at home and scorning goals with relative ease.
All the guys dressed in black and gold defended stubbornly, attacked in numbers, and hounded MK to the bitter end.
It wasn't until the final whistle blew when incidentally we were trying to get Scrambler off and replace him with a forward looking to draw the game and getting a well deserved point, that Milton Keynes knew they had won it.
We could mention some poor refereeing decisions that may have turned the game for us as the penalties were at crucial moments in the game but it wasn't to be.
Before the match, we would have settled for the performance. We got that and more but to lose 3-2 and put all our effort and spirit in, deserved more.
Then to the Jets on Sunday. We carried on exactly where we left off against the lighting. We were terrific.
We bullied and harassed and took the game to Slough against one of the best funded teams in the league.
You would not have known that there is a gulf between us in terms of the funding available.
All the way through the match and deep into the third period, we defended stoutly and attacked in numbers to try to win the match in front of an eager and passionate crowd and then the inch and the second that turned the match against us during a five minute Powerplay, an attacking Slough cleared the puck into our own end to change weary players, Scrambler was attempting to catch Slow on the back foot, and push the puck to our forwards deep in the Slow half.
Unfortunately for him, the team and the fans in the hive! It slipped agonisingly underneath his stick and the red light above his head went on.
He had been magnificent all night but one freak goal effectively turned the game against us. We carried on attacking but again were caught on the hop and ended up losing 3-1.
Again I felt cheated as did we all. A fantastic performance like that deserves two points. Let's hope we play the same way this weekend against Telford.
I hope you all enjoyed the performance by champion figure skaters Fiona and Dmitry. It was absolutely amazing. I could see many of you astounded as they performed the headbanger. I for one can say that it was the first time I had seen it performed live as opposed to on the TV.
Fiona's head was dangerously close to the ice and afterwards, Stuart said how impressed he was with that manoeuvre, and Dmitry commented that he was getting pretty tired whilst he was spinning Fiona around.
I have to say that I am disappointed that despite three fantastic performances over the last couple of weeks, two of those games have been on the road and therefore only a handful of fans have witnessed them.
I do hope that we can continue to play well at home so that the majority can appreciate the improvements made. The boys still need your support whether at home or away. They are still our team and we will support them regardless.
Finally, I am sorry to say that we will no longer be producing match night DVD's of our games.
The simple fact is we are not able to cover the costs and we have hardly sold any since the season started. We may reinstate them if we can find a sponsor or someone who is willing to video the games for us free of charge otherwise it is not possible for us to continue.
Keep following the Bee Army.
