Bees blog: What a season!By Katie Eleftheriou
February 24, 2010
Katie Eleftheriou, fan turned boss of the Bracknell Bees, gives an insight into running a top ice hockey team.
I can't believe there are only five weeks till the end of the season, excluding play-offs and Coventry of course. What a season!
All being well, after this weekend’s win against the HSM Wildcats means that we are hopefully in with a chance of a play-off spot.
There, I've said it now and let's just hope I haven't jinxed it.
It's been a tough week for the boys with three games in almost as many days.
Matters were not helped with Bicksy away and Greg Randall and Scrambler sick.
So when the Flames visited us on Thursday night for the re-arranged fixture, the advice to the team was play hard but stay safe and fit for the weekend.
What a close and exciting game. We took the Flames to extra time.
I feel it should have been a win in regulation but for a last minute penalty on Bomber after he was slashed by Masa who then retaliated by trying to knock his face cage off. Masa took a cheap shot on Bomber knowing that he would retaliate and unfortunately, the Bees paid the price.
With a late goal from the Flames, we were in overtime.
A player down is no way to enter sudden death overtime against the prolific Flames and their winning goal came just half way through overtime.
Marashi was superb in the pipes and so deserved his MOM. Smital for the Flames was a complete gentleman throughout the game.
One point to the Bees at least and a fine performance to boot.
It did feel as though we had lost the match rather than gained a point, the performance was that good.
I think we all knew that Saturday's game against the Bison would be tough and we were definitely not expecting to win.
It was far more important to finish the game with some dignity without the Bison dishing out another spanking, keeping fresh for our must win match against Swindon the following day.
I think we succeeded in our endeavours. We lost the match 6-1 but all energies were being conserved.
Sunday was probably our most important game this season - so far!
Those of you that came to support the Bees will know how badly the game started. We were 0-2 down after the first period and things were not looking too perky despite us peppering our old nettie Disco in the Cats goal. The boy was certainly the busier of the two keepers regardless of the shot count.
The second period however was a massive turning point. With five goals scored and no answer from the Wildcats, you could sense the excitement and the atmosphere at the Hive.
The third period was eagerly anticipated and it did not disappoint.
The only fly in the ointment was the away goal seemed to have some kind of force field around it because every time Pinc or Cesky tried to score, they were denied.
The Wildcats pulled a goal back and then just under one minute from the end of the game, they pulled their net minder.
That was the cue for Bees to score another open net goal.
This was the first game this season that we have had a penalty shot during the game.
It was interesting to see that Scrambler is like many of us who cannot watch when penalties are being taken. Just as long as he watches when the opposition is taking it on him!
This weekend we have back to back games with the Phantoms from Peterborough. Hope you will make the trip up the A1 to one of the coldest rinks in the league.
Still proud to be a Bee, Katie x
