It's coal but is it Art?By Melinda Webb

If you fancy yourself as a bit of an art buff and want to up your culture-cred, then head to Wolverhampton Art Gallery and feast your eyes upon the latest modern art “installation” by Matthew Cornford and David Cross.
The Lion and the Unicorn is on show in the council-run gallery and features the sort of art that will have most of us scratching our heads – anyone with half a brain can see it’s complete rubbish.
Or in this case the pits. The work is actually 14 tons of coal, piled high in a room and making the sort of mess that would result in most of us being prosecuted for fly tipping.
This mess (oops, work of art) is intended to “highlight the crucial role played by coal in the development of the Midlands, Britain and world”.
